Having worked on both sides of the camera in a casting situation, I have come to the realization that a casting session is not something that should be handled by the lowest paid PA in an agency's organization.
Unfortunately, it often is.
When you contact an agency with a casting request, you are asking that agency to go through their roster of actors and send you their best picks for the job at hand. Many agencies send out a call to every actor who even remotely (e.g. male, female) fits your breakdown criteria. Those actors come in to read for you on videotape (if you're lucky enough to have that.) Sometimes all you get is a headshot and a guarantee.
Then when you end up hiring some of those actors, you spend a great deal of time teaching them to act or enunciate or read from the teleprompter.
When I am casting my own projects and I send out a breakdown and a call for actors, I want to see actors who are right for the part - the right age, the right look, the right level of ability. Given that, I want each person I see to be the one that I hire. I am looking for the best person for the job and I want every actor to give the best audition they are capable of giving. Instead, I get every person that agency has on its roster - whether that person can act or not.
Frustrating!
That's when I decided to roll up my sleeves and jump in. |
